Video files don't embed in emails. They don't play in most chat platforms without a click. GIFs do. That's the reason GIFs are still everywhere despite being a 1987 file format: they play automatically, inline, on virtually every surface that displays images.
Converting a video clip to GIF is straightforward, but getting a GIF that's both sharp and small enough to share requires understanding a few settings. Here's what matters.
The three settings that control GIF quality and size
1. Duration — keep it short
GIF is a lossless format with a 256-colour palette. Every extra second adds significant file size. For anything you're sharing in chat or embedding in a page, aim for 2–6 seconds. Longer clips belong in video format.
2. Frame rate — 8–12 fps is the sweet spot
Video runs at 24–60 fps. GIFs rarely need more than 12 fps to look smooth, and 8 fps is perfectly watchable for most content. Dropping from 24 fps to 10 fps cuts file size by more than half.
3. Output width — smaller is fine
A 1080px wide GIF is almost always overkill. For chat and email, 480px is crisp enough on any screen. For website embeds, 640px gives you flexibility without an unreasonable file size.
How to convert video to GIF in your browser
- 1Go to tools.zenwebx.com/video-to-gif.
- 2Drop your MP4, MOV, or WebM video (up to 200 MB).
- 3Set the start time and duration of the clip you want to convert.
- 4Set frame rate (10 fps works for most use cases) and output width (480px or 640px).
- 5Click Convert to GIF and download.
Processing runs entirely in your browser via FFmpeg.wasm. Nothing is uploaded. The output GIF has no watermark.
What if the GIF is still too large?
If your GIF is coming out over 5–8 MB, try these adjustments in order: (1) reduce the duration, (2) drop the frame rate to 8 fps, (3) reduce the width to 360px. Each change compounds — dropping from 12 fps to 8 fps and from 640px to 480px typically halves the output size.
