Bluesky doesn't have a download button for videos, and long-pressing a video in the app doesn't offer to save it. Screen recording works, but you lose quality and pick up any on-screen notifications. There's a better way that gives you the original file.
Step by step: Bluesky video to MP4
- 1In Bluesky, tap the share icon on the post and choose Copy link to post.
- 2Go to tools.zenwebx.com/bluesky-video-downloader and paste the link.
- 3Click Fetch. The post text, handle and thumbnail appear.
- 4Click Get next to MP4 · Original, then click Download.
Why you get the original file
Bluesky is built on the AT Protocol. Every account has a Personal Data Server (PDS) that stores its posts and uploaded files as "blobs". When you watch a video in the app, Bluesky's video service streams a converted version in small HLS chunks. But the original upload is still sitting on the author's PDS.
ZenTools looks up which server holds the author's account, then fetches the original blob directly. That means you get exactly what was uploaded — same resolution, same quality, one MP4 file — rather than a stitched-together stream.
Because Bluesky is an open protocol, all public posts are readable without an account. No login is needed and nothing about you is sent to Bluesky beyond a normal public request.
Images and audio
- Image posts: every image downloads at full size, one file each.
- MP3: pick MP3 on a video post to keep just the audio, converted in your browser.
- Thumbnail: save the video's preview frame as a JPG.
When a download fails
The most common reason is that the post was deleted. Rarely, an author hosts their account on their own server rather than Bluesky's; if that server is offline, the video can't be fetched. Posts on Bluesky-hosted accounts — the vast majority — work reliably.
